The Royal Lancaster London Hotel used to be a place frequented by celebrities and royalty alike. The Beatles famously hosted the after-party for their Yellow Submarine film premiere in its Yellow Submarine Nightclub, Michael Caine filmed scenes for the original The Italian Job movie, and Princess Diana and Muhammed Ali attended events within the hotel.

Fifty years after its opening, the Royal Lancaster has now reopened with a $140 million-plus renovation, completed in November 2017. The interior and exterior were totally remodelled under the vision of London-based interior designers Studio Proof. A double-height ceiling was introduced in the lobby area, featuring white Carrara marble and elegant wood accents throughout, giving the mid-century icon a thoroughly 21st-century face-lift.

Guests can enjoy cocktails, coffee and snacks in The Hyde Lobby Bar, named after the famous park that’s just across the street from the hotel. A palatial staircase leads guests from the lobby to the first floor, where the hotel’s famous Thai restaurant, Nipa Thai, has attracted diners for decades. The Lounge Bar and The Park Room are also situated on the first floor.

There’s a total of 411 redesigned room and suites featuring sweeping views over London. The Park Suite has the most breathtaking views of Hyde Park from every angle—including the bathtub. The hotel has partnered with The White Company for its toiletries and the bathrooms also feature waterfall showers and underfloor heating.

A fun fact: there are 10 beehives on the roof of the hotel, from which the hotel get the honey to use in its restaurants. The bees pollinate Hyde Park’s lime trees, giving the honey a mild citrus flavour and light champagne colour. It’s all part of the hotel’s environmentally-conscious and sustainable spirit.
