Only time will tell if Swan Oak will eventually earn iconic status akin to that of the Eames House Bird—Vitra’s reproduction of a treasured piece of folk art prominently displayed in the home of Charles and Ray Eames—but for now Normann Copenhagen can revel in the 2015 iF Design Award bestowed on its own winsome wooden bird. Honored in the Product Design category, the Danish brand’s Swan Oak, introduced in 2014, is an object imbued with the reductive elegance intrinsic to Nordic design—and, yes, befitting a swan—along with a smoothly stylized profile wholly attractive to design buffs keen on objects with sculptural heft. A creation of the Brooklyn-based Norwegian studio, Everything Elevated, Normann Copenhagen has labeled Swan Oak “an avoidable new collector’s item,” and the iF Design Award committee clearly agrees.
