A 1927 issue of Popular Mechanics showcased an interesting urban planning idea for New York. To solve the city’s traffic problems (existing even way back in 1927), a “remarkable system of roof-top boulevards [would] run more than sixteen miles in a straight line through the heart of the city.” Elevators would shuttle cars from ground to roof, and the buildings would hold housing, public services, and businesses.
