In partnership with Brooklyn-based Snarkitecture, the National Building Museum (NBM) in Washington, D.C. aims to once again create an interactive architectural exhibit as a part of its “Summer Block Party” programming. While last year’s exhibit included a life-sized maze by BIG, this summer, the museum will host a 10,000 square foot enclosure in its Great Hall called the BEACH.
According to the museum, the BEACH will be “built out of construction materials such as scaffolding, wooden panels, and perforated mesh, all clad in stark white. Monochromatic beach chairs and umbrellas will sprinkle the 50-foot wide ‘shoreline,’ and the ‘ocean’ will cumulate in a mirrored wall that creates a seemingly infinite reflected expanse. Visitors are welcome to ‘swim’ in the ocean,” which will be comprised of around 750,000 recyclable plastic balls.
In order to construct the BEACH, the NBM has created a crowdfunding campaign, and is nearly halfway to their $10,000 goal.
The exhibit will be open from July 4th to September 7th of this year. Learn more about the project in the NBM’s video below.
