Bates Masi + Architects once again knocked it out of the park with another beach retreat where we’d like to stake our claim. Named Pierson’s Way, this East Hampton, New York residence is located within a private seaside community and its modern design was streamlined to work with the fairly conservative homes surrounding it.
The sprawling residence references gabled potato barns in the area and the S-shaped design features Alaskan yellow shingles on the roof and side walls creating a uniform look. Interspersed with the wood is another low maintenance material – steel. Both naturally weather perfectly blending into the surrounding earthy landscape.
The large scale of the home is masked thanks to a unique structural system that almost disguises the second floor from the street.
On the ground floor, the exposed ceilings are clad in wooden shingles, much like the exterior. The public spaces are flanked with floor-to-ceiling, sliding glass doors that open up to the private outdoor areas.
