Exclusive Interview with Yana Svetlova | modern wallcovering designs
Yana Svetlova was born and raised in Saint-Petersburg, what gave the designer an enormous sense of beauty and proportion. Daughter of a big soviet industrial engineer, she felt her heart calling for design after being graduated in Public Relations. Yana was incapable of saying ‘no’ to her heart so she graduated at Moscow School of Design “Detali” with an ‘excellent’ diploma and had a probation in “KLC School of Design” in London. Her projects were published in professional magazines and in TV design shows and she was a nominee for the “First national contest for a Russian style concept hotel” in 2013, a nominee for an Interior Design Award of “Sobaka” magazine for public interior of a bar “Majakovskyi”, and also a nominee of national “Interia Awards 2015″ for private mention interior. Yana is a member of the “Russian association of Interior Designers” and her goal is to show her enormous and truly passion for art and design through her amazing creations as well as to give this love to her clients and customers. Unique Blog asked some questions that Yana answered and we felt the love. Thank you Yana!
UNIQUE BLOG: Being in love with our work is always the key to achieve better results. Are you in love with this job? What do you love the most about being an interior designer?
YANA: Interiors stay with our clients for ages giving them emotions everyday. I believe that the job of interior designer is to form this “emotional comfort” for the client. And this is why I am absolutely in love with my job. Because it’s not about selling and buying – it’s about giving.
UNIQUE BLOG: Do you have a favorite story about one of your life projects or about your career?
YANA: While working with interiors I came to idea to create my own brand of wallpaper and textile Yana Svetlova Wallcoverings. It is the first Russian design Wallcovering brand.
I have always tempted to give the walls a unique look. I believe that only the beauty of a handmade work can compete with unique signature of nature. Trying to imitate its wonders, we create our own masterpiece.
We made a lot of watercolor paintings and adopted them for interior use. My Nature inspired collection with big scaled watercolor patterns and stone-like mosaics became my favorite project – because it’s more than design, it’s art.
UNIQUE BLOG: How big is the importance to have the perfect chemistry between you and your clients in order to achieve the best results?
YANA: It is always a gift to work with a like-minded people. Interior is collaboration between clients needs and designers knowledge. The better connection you have with you client, the more you start to love the project. For me this chemistry is the biggest motivation to show my professional potential.
UNIQUE BLOG: Do you believe that working with teams in interior design is better or worse than working alone? Why?
YANA: Interior design is not only creativity. It’s a lot of management and, of course, team work. Communication is our everyday job we need to do to achieve our goals. I do interior concept by myself and then I have a team of professionals working with me on the project. I’ve been working in atelier interior and I find it to be very convenient.
In my wallpaper project mainly I do everything by myself but I also have a production team.
UNIQUE BLOG: Keep up to date on all the trends is essential for anyone who wants to conquer this market. In what ways do you keep current with new trends?
YANA: For me the biggest trend showcases are international trade shows. You have an opportunity to see and compare many products at once, to catch new technologies and to get acquainted to amazing professional. Trendy things are eye-catching. This is why I have chosen Maison et Objet Paris for my premier collection presentation. The feedback you can see on the fair is the best rating.
UNIQUE BLOG: How would you describe your work style? Do you have any kind of “signatures” that can help identifying your projects?
YANA: I always try to make my design messages massive and clear. My main idea is that design should be sincere and honest.
UNIQUE BLOG: All artists need some inspiration to work, and interior designers are artists too. So, what or who really inspires you?
YANA: Nature is the biggest artist for me, I can’t stop admiring it everyday.
UNIQUE BLOG: If you had to pick one project around the world, that you wish it was been made by you, which would it be?
YANA: I would love to work on a luxury contemporary hotel in Asia. I admire the new architectural style and I think it calls for new interior standard. Large scales forms and patterns – is what I love right now, you can see it in my work.
UNIQUE BLOG: Choose the best pieces to compose a project can be the secret to getting the best overall result. Although it seems easy, this is a delicate task and needs full attention on time to execute it. Do you have some tips and advices for those who do not know well how to start a challenge like this?
YANA: First of all, you need to listen to your heart! Secondly, you need to remember that the main hero in the interior is your client! Thirdly, each object in the interior should have a goal. That’s why less is better. (Less quantity more quality)
UNIQUE BLOG: Which are your favorite brands, those that can never miss in one of your projects?
YANA: For the last five years my attention is drawn to Portuguese design. I really enjoy works of Delightfull and Brabbu. I find them to be very contemporary and sophisticated. Placing their pieces you can make a statement
I am a fan of Marc de Berny collection, especially the new Munira line inspired by Art Deco jewelry.
I love so many Russian brand such as Soha, AOWood and many other. We have very young and developing market.
UNIQUE BLOG: Regarding Yana Svetlova Wallcoverings, you wallpapers design project, how and why did it born?
YANA: While working in interior design I have always asked myself why do we always order product from abroad and don’t have any choice in Russia. This thought brought to an idea to be the first one to do it! So I decided to create my own Russian based brand with home production. It is very competitive because of the sort production dates and products concept.
It took me 8 months to bring my ideas to life and to present my first wallpaper and textile collection at Maison et Objet in Paris this September.
I have combined hand painting art with high digital technologies. That is why the collection has very artistic look.
