For designer Celerie Kemble, a floor lamp is a crucial decorating tool. “In a room full of pairs, it adds a welcome element of asymmetry,” she says. And a standing lamp offers flexibility. “When you rearrange the furniture,” she explains, “you can easily rearrange your lighting as well.”
Decorator Miles Redd often uses a lamp with modern lines to shake up a traditional interior. Introducing light sources at various heights — including eye level — is key, he says: “An array of different lights gives evenness and warmth. Too much overhead lighting takes away the romance”.
