Atelier YokYok has created an immersive experience of string and light for their “Shooting Vaults” installation at St. Stephen’s Cathedral in Cahors, France. Created in collaboration with Ulysse Lacoste and Laure Qaremy, the project will be on display through the month of June.
Set within the context of stone masonry originally erected in the 11th century, blue strings stretch across the courtyard to connect the arches together. Rounded arches are blended with pointed ones, to create a sense of transition from whichever way one walks through the installation.
Structurally supported by metal frames, the strings move uninterrupted towards the center of the courtyard where they converge and then weave around the metal supports. Much like the larger cloister, which is identified by its open walkway with a wall on one side and open space on the other, The Shooting Vaults create a secondary cloister within its center, opening up to a circular patch of vegetation.
The Shooting Vaults is one of 25 landscape-themed installations on display through June in Cahors, France, as part of the 2015 Cahors June Festival. The festival began in 2006, and has become an innovative and creative event of international attention.
