The Eameses are best known for their groundbreaking contributions to architecture, furniture design, industrial design and manufacturing, and the photographic arts.
Charles and Ray’s work was a manifestation of one broad, all-encompassing goal: to positively impact people’s lives and environments. Whether offering a comfortable chair to sit in or the tools to obtain knowledge, they tried to get everybody to think in a more analytic and open way about how things might be different in their lives.
The Auction
A cache of unique furniture designed by Charles and Ray Eameswill be entering the auction market this September, providing an opportunity for midcentury modern fans to see rare pieces exhibiting the evolution of the pair’s distinctive style.
Organized by Chicago-based Wright Auctions and curated by Eames expert Daniel Ostroff, the sale will showcase the extensive JF Chen Collection, which includes numerous designs stretching from the ’40s through the ’90s.

The L.A.-based vintage expert amassed a collection of hundreds of chairs and other furniture, mostly focused on Herman Miller products, including a rare set of six rosewood DCM chairs and an early red DCM, a match for a similar piece currently on display at Yale.
Previously part of numerous exhibitions, these designs will soon be photographed and used as the basis for a wide-ranging online reference on the official Eames site.

In addition, collaborations between Charles Eames and Eero Saarinen for MoMA’s 1941 Organic Design Competition, which introduced the world to the Eameses’ furniture, as well as private pieces made for the Valastro family, will also be part of the sizable sale.
