Gallaudet University, the world’s only university for deaf and hard of hearing students, has announced an international design competition to re-design their campus in Washington DC. The competition itself will launch in September, but interested architects and firms can sign up to be kept updated on the website.

The original campus, designed by Frederick Law Olmsted in 1866 is protected by the National Register of Historic Places, and is characterized by its many Gothic landmarks. The new design will focus on this historic core, and its surrounding public spaces, exploring cultural exchange and innovation. As well, the university’s reputation as a centre for deaf research, culture and design is expected to be central to the competition brief. The competition website, including sign-up for regular updates, can be found here.
