In the coastal city of Hualien, near Taipei, Taiwan, Holm Architecture Office (HAO) is in the process of creating their newest project, Wood Shed, for the Taiwan Land Development Corporation. An adaptive reuse and repurposing of an existing warehouse, the design draws inspiration from the forest and environment around it. When completed, the warehouse-turned-multipurpose space will have a “new building envelope that blends naturally into its surroundings.”
The exterior is meant to look like a “built forest,” with vertical wooden fins attached to a series of stacked horizontal extrusions that, together, will mimic the forest around it, while simultaneously shading the interior.
The roofs and corners of the existing structures will be lifted to provide better access and ventilation, and the use of clear polycarbonate on some interior surfaces will allow for integrated lighting and ease of climate control in changing weather.
“With the Wood Shed project we wanted to redefine the mainstream shed volume to directly reflect the beautiful surroundings of the Taiwan landscape,” director Jens Holm said. “The project reuses the existing long span steel structure, keeping a completely flexible interior plan which allows the building to be used for a multitude of programs ranging from storage to exhibition space.”
