When a house takes 7 years to renovate, it had better be worth the effort, and from the looks of it, American transplant Pamela Ruiz’s painstakingly renovated Havana villa is plenty worth it.
Ruiz, along with her Cuban artist husband, Damian Aquiles, has breathed new life into a once-grand 100 year-old crumbling house by arduously repairing and replacing, salvaging and repurposing—and, most tellingly, allowing some of the home’s original decaying markings to stay put alongside sparkling new additions and glossy new finishes.
By allowing peeling walls, faded wallpaper and original ceramic floor tiles to reside alongside sleek Mid-Century Modern furniture, dazzling chandeliers, and large-scale contemporary art, Ruiz and Azquiles have created a rich and enviable tableau of past and present—and given us a window into what it’s like to have the best of both worlds.
