HHF Architects Transform Existing Parking Structure into Public Destination

By Patricia Arcilla

Swiss firm HHF Architects have released images and drawings for “Parking & More,” a mixed-use structure and public facility for the Dreispitz quarter in the Bernese Alps.

An addition to an existing steel parking complex, “Parking & More” combines a parking lot with eateries, sport facilities, and shops, “creating a vibrant and lively street and a partially covered urban plaza.” Read more about the project and view selected images after the break.

Described by Basel-based as “intense and multilayered infrastructure which works as an urban hinge,” the project bridges surrounding areas, directing circulation between these and increasing mobility. An otherwise rectilinear plan is offset by the twin spiral ramps of the carpark entrance and exit, allowing motor vehicles access to the roof and all building floors. A rooftop viewing platform overlooking the Dreispitz quarter is also accessible by pedestrians, via a pedestrian sideway along one of the two ramps.

Other rooftop facilities include an urban farm, public garden, event hall, and numerous eateries, reflecting HHF Architects’ desire to achieve maximum functionality within “Parking & More”‘s 8000-square-meter footprint. The ground floor features a commercial precinct of shops and eateries, whilst other floors feature a motel and sports club. Above-standard ceiling heights within the parking lot are intended to cater for pop-ups and permanent programs and installations.

The winner of a 2014 invited competition for the Christoph Merian Foundation, the yet unrealized project will offer a total of 39,500-square-meters of useable floor area.
