Images of Souto Moura Arquitectos‘ first US project has emerged. Aimed to replace a former gas station at 2715 Pennsylvanian Avenue NW in Washington DC, the five-story red brick and concrete building will feature a ground floor restaurant and eight 2,000-square-foot apartment units with balconies, a gym and penthouse terrace.
As BizJournals reports, the proposal is being pitched by EastBanc Inc. as the new “entrance to Georgetown.” The Portuguese architect chose red brick “because it seems to be the most appropriate for this part of the city.”
“The slabs of concrete and ground floor walls in granite give the building a certain tectonic and gravitational image, like the buildings in Old Georgetown,” as described in the planned-unit development application.
The 43,396-square-foot, 60-foot-tall building has already earned its support from the Georgetown Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC), who commended the project for its connection to the street: “We appreciate the productive and welcoming use of this property at the principal entrance to Georgetown, including a restaurant with outdoor seating and apartments bringing activity to an area largely lacking in residential accommodations.”
Full approval is still pending.
