nps tchoban voss and Hager Partner Design Recreation Center for Nauen

This first-prize competition winning proposal by nps tchoban voss and Hager Partner gives new life to the municipal outdoor pool facility in Nauen, Germany. Commissioned for future construction, the recreation center brings a multi-functional layout to the complex, activating the space year round and providing the public with a recreational hub.

To create the new recreation center, two free-form structures share a joint roof, defining both the entrance to the existing pool and the single-story gatehouse addition. The center’s green hues and flowing surfaces speak to their natural surroundings, while its raised location announces its presence from afar. The public services including the refectory, information center, wellness area, and food counter are housed in the northern structure, while a ticket counter, changing room, and storage are located in the south structure.

For maximized use, the facility offers a number of public activities to encourage community participation. A multipurpose play field hosts the majority, offering ping-pong, a playground, volleyball, and mini-golf all within its compact perimeter for ease of access. Externally, the green space provides a separate environment from the outdoor pool via methodical landscaping, extending its use through the winter months as a communal park.

Maintaining its connection to nature, the building employs an insulated green roof supported by molded laminated wood beams. The facade mirrors this concept through its prefabricated wood-frame construction faced with insulated timber panels in the facility’s closed spaces. Defining the open areas, triple-glazed panels with external solar shades bring in natural daylight and can be adjusted for changing conditions.
