Radical Ice Cream * Wyne Veen

By Alexandra Sousa

Radical Ice Cream

Wyne Veen is a Dutch artist working mostly in the photographic medium. Veen’s work consists of sculptural arrangements, utilizing mass produce objects.
Inspired by all things overly developed, Veen is fascinated by our highly manufactured lives.

Wyne Veen deconstructs the hit flavors invented by cult ice cream haven Humphry Slocombe in her pop art-inspired, color-blocked still lifes. Founded in 2008 by former pastry chef Jake Godby and his partner Sean Vahey, Humphry Slocombe, named after characters from the camp 70s British sitcom Are You Being Served?, has become famous for its imaginative, ever-changing menu. Flavors run the gamut from canonical to oh-no-you-didn’t, and the duo insists that every lick is delicious. Veen uses ingredients, both real and imagined, to create her abstract works, offering a glimpse into Humphry Slocombe’s unfettered imagination.
