Eight practitioners from the US, Canada and Mexico have been selected to receive The Architectural League of New York‘s 33rd annual Emerging Voices award – one of the most coveted awards in North American architecture. Each recipient was selected for being a “distinct design voice” with the “potential to influence” disciplines of architecture, landscape architecture, and urbanism.
“This year’s Voices critically re-envision solutions for contemporary design concerns—programmatic, typological, and tectonic—that have the potential to inspire new approaches to building and form,” says program director Anne Rieselbach.

Benjamin Aranda and Chris Lasch, ArandaLasch, New York and Tucson
Aranda and Lasch experiment with research and innovative building practices, producing objects, furniture, installations, buildings, and landscapes.
Manuel Cervantes Cespedes, MANUEL CERVANTES CESPEDES / CC ARQUITECTOS, Mexico City
Cervantes Cespedes sees his firm as part of a generation of Mexican architecture, late heirs to Mexican Modernism and traditions of the first pre-Hispanic settlements.
Gabriela Etchegaray and Jorge Ambrosi, AMBROSI | ETCHEGARAY, Mexico City
Ambrosi and Etchegaray seek an architecture connected to nature, with the presence of earth, gravity, and light.
Alejandro Guerrero and Andrea Soto, Principals, ATELIER ARSº, Guadalajara
Guerrero and Soto see their practice as a way of thinking about the discipline in which history, theory, and criticism are present in the architectural project.

Rovira is committed to a process of design development, analysis, and investigation that seeks larger connections to ecology, patterns, history, and time.
Elizabeth Whittaker, Principal, Merge Architects, Boston
Whittaker’s architecture considers the art of making in the context of re-defining the urban and social boundaries of the city.
Winners will present lectures this March at the Scholastic Auditorium in Soho. Additionally, the League will present digital features on each of the eight firms on archleague.org/EV15, exploring their work and design “voice” through interviews, video, and documentation of their work, available starting in April.
The 2015 jury included Cynthia Davidson, Susannah Drake, Mario Gooden, Louise Harpman, Paul Lewis, Toshiko Mori, Thomas Phifer, and Billie Tsien. Emerging Voices is organized by League Program Director Anne Rieselbach.
