Vancouver design studio Splyce Design managed to create an ingeniously versatile, yet visually spare, home office for a local client seeking both a formal office and a craft/hobby studio—thanks to a custom made modern storage unit and flexible work surface. Limited to the confines of just 115 sq ft of space, Splyce created 200 cubic feet of floor-to-ceiling storage along the length of one wall, providing ample space for keeping craft and hobby materials corralled and out of sight. A horizontal pocket along the length of the storage piece hides a specially milled wood desktop which slides along a hidden track system and cantilevers out to a range of perpendicular positions, either creating a separate work station or exactingly adjoining a stand-alone desk to morph into a larger desktop. When not needed, the wooden slab easily recedes back into the pocket, opening up floor space and, consequently, the study. Just like that.
